Dear Sisters and Brothers

At the bottom of this email you will find a beautiful full text service
for this coming Sunday prepared for us by Rev Andrew Roberts.  Even if
you are planning to attend your normal church service I encourage you to
read this and use it as part of your reflections this week and indeed to
pass it on to anyone in your church who may not be able to get to
church.

We have been so blessed over the past years by all those who, week by
week, have prepared their services early and have made them available
for us to read and share.  God bless you all - we would be lost without
you...

Meanwhile we have been asked to highlight to all church folk the
opportunity to consider leaving a gift to the church in your will.
Here's the link if you wish to prayerfully consider this…

Covid Recommendations
We continue to recommend that in all churches:
a) people wear masks as they enter church and also wear masks throughout
worship (where applicable and exemptions allowing such as those leading
worship)
b) gentle singing behind masks is OK
c) churches do not meet for coffee after worship as this is when people
ignore the rules most and put themselves at risk.

Alongside VoSWorship, the Circuit Platform has been undergoing an update

Dear Sisters and Brothers
May I wish you all a happy new year…. I appreciate that this is in reality difficult for me to say and for many to hear.  There is much uncertainty all around us which can cause our heads to drop but at the same time I am reminded that our God calls us to look up and see, like Mary at the tomb or the disciples walking the Emmaus Road, or fishing at the lake - that Jesus in his risen power is here with us.  As Matt & Beth Redman write in StF 626:

Even though I walk through the valley
Of the shadow of death,
Your perfect love is casting out fear.
And even when I'm caught in the middle
Of the storm of this life,
I won't turn back; I know you are near.

And I will fear no evil,
For my God is with me.
And if my God is with me,
Whom then shall I fear?

Whom then shall we fear as we embark upon 2022?  Let us be bold in love and faith….

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Well here we are - Christmas almost upon us.  We give thanks for getting safely to this point and pray that we may be open to God’s invitation to come and kneel at the crib, to see the wonder of the Christ-child.   This amazing moment is, for me the most precious and utterly unique aspect of the Christian faith.  God, appearing not as almighty, or with the power of this 125 Billion galaxy universe… but in humility and vulnerability.  No other faith dares to consider God in this manner and yet to us this is the very key of our faith.  God with us - Immanuel.  We cannot perhaps fully understand it, but we give thanks and praise to God that this should be God’s way of sacrificial love that enables us to know God more fully.

Full Text for the Next TWO Sundays

Note that with a number of staff away after Christmas this email covers the next TWO Sundays - so there are two full text services attached for personal reflection and to support any Local arrangements planned for Jan 2nd.

Special Online Service for Sunday 26th

Please also note that the the circuit team with the generous support of the CTC have worked hard to provide a pre-recorded service for Sunday 26th December when most of our churches will be closed.  It will be available here:

https://www.valeofstour.org.uk/virtual-church/live/vosworship

So please enjoy this service and be blessed.

Children’s and Families Work - News from our Children and Families Worker - Claire Biggs...

THANK YOU

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in children and youth work in 2021. Once, again it has been a challenging year for churches and connecting with families but there has been some wonderful work across the circuit from Holiday clubs, to Activity emails, School activities to creative All age worship. It is getting more and more difficult at the moment to plan for the up and coming months but God will see us through. Can I ask everyone to keep our communities in their prayers, in particular our Special Spirits families and friends at Safe Families who are really struggling to know what is best for themselves and their vulnerable children. Thanks again for all the support from across the circuit and I look forward to working with you all in 2022.

ACTION FOR CHILDREN

Just a reminder that we have an Action for children meeting planned at Amblecote Wordsley on January  10th at 2pm - I am hoping we can do this in person, safely spaced with masks - if things change over Christmas I will look at an alternative date/method. Please let your church reps know

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Who could imagine that following the Covid announcement last week, things should again accelerate so quickly in the past seven days with new announcements and changing rules almost on a daily basis.  As a leadership team we have been speaking with churches across the circuit and most have very sensibly been cancelling social gatherings whilst going ahead with planned worship services using existing Covid safe practices and the guidelines below.  This seems a reasonable balance although like you I was very disappointed that various daytime and lunchtime events have been postponed or cancelled.  We remember especially the group of families with children with special needs whose Christmas special next week with Claire and the team will not now go ahead.

Once again these decisions are local ones and with many/most managing to get triple jabbed we are hopeful that at least Sunday services, gentle carol services and daytime worship can proceed safely through to Christmas.

We pray for all churches and communities whose worship plans in the great season of Advent and Christmas have been disrupted and we pray especially for those extended families across the country whose plans to meet may be in doubt.  For our collective spiritual and mental well being we hope that the vaccine does its job in limiting hospitalisations despite increased infection rates.

Finally we also encourage those in preaching / leadership roles to consider getting a new lateral flow test pack.  These are very quick and easy and can be used on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning before coming to church.

Covid Recommendations
We continue to recommend that in all churches:

  • people wear masks as they enter church and also also wear masks throughout worship (where applicable and exemptions allowing such as those leading worship)
  • gentle singing behind masks is OK
  • churches do not meeting for coffee after worship as this is when people ignore the rules most and put themselves at risk.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Covid Update
Once again Covid seeks to disrupt our life and plans and we pray that God’s grace may flow into this ongoing situation enabling goodness to come from any and all situations.

Following the government’s announcement yesterday and subsequent detailed analysis of the government website we recommend that all churches from this Sunday ensure that:

  • people wear masks as they enter church and now also also wear masks throughout worship (where applicable and exemptions allowing such as those leading worship)
  • gentle singing behind masks is OK
  • churches consider not meeting for coffee after worship as this is when people ignore the rules most and put themselves at risk.

The last point is a difficult one and your response to the government is a local decision.  If you do meet for coffee please encourage people to space out.  Overall, I encourage churches to reflect and be clear with people as to what is expected in the coming weeks.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

We were glad to rejoice together last Sunday in a circuit tea and service at Kingswinford.  Thank you to those who attended.  We recognise that keeping the balance between Covid saftey and attending joint services is a challenge and we continue to seek to provide safe spacing and the option to wear masks as part of this process.

PLEASE READ
I was reminded again last week that some people receiving our notices and full text service are not necessarily passing it on.  We continue to put a lot of work into providing full text services every week, as we have done for over 20 months, but our email list does not cover everyone and we need local churches to take responsibility for this.  If you are receiving this email direct from the Circuit office then you are one of a few people who are sent it as representatives of your church so please make sure that you check if there are folk in your church to whom you could/should be passing on these notices and attached full text service.  Please find ways of getting it to them so that they are not left out.  Thank you to those who have been doing this already for so long...

We pray that our Christingle, Carol Services, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services will focus on providing a warm welcome to any visitors.

Finally a plea for people to turn out to support / attend the following service where our guest will be the chair of district…

The District Chair Visiting our Circuit
You are invited to a special Tree of Lights Service, led by the District Chair - Rev Rachel Parkinson and Rev Helen Croft at Brierley Hill Methodist on Sunday 5th December at 6pm.

Dear Sisters and Brothers
I am delighted to attach the preaching plan for December to February with thanks to all those who have contributed to making this possible.  And remember that if you have a local arrangement you can use the attached full text service to provide you with prayers, a reflection and even hymn choices.

It has been a particular blessing to see and hear reports of so many special services being conducted around the circuit for Remembrance Sunday.  Our communities may not come to church regularly and so how we engage in these key moments of the year and connect the themes of Remembrance and Peace to the kingdom values Jesus showed and taught - especially as we approach Advent and Christmas - are crucial to our role of sharing the Good News.

We pray that in the same manner our Christingle, Carol Services, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services will focus on providing a warm welcome to any visitors.

May God bless you through this coming week and please read the notices below - there is a lot going on!

 Dear Sisters and Brothers

Today and on Sunday we mark Remembrance. Each of you will be affected in different ways through family history perhaps or simply because you have come to appreciate the extent of the sacrifices that have been made for us before we were born.

I am reminded that the Methodist Baptism service talks about Christ coming, showing God’s love, dying on the cross, rising and sitting at God’s right hand praying for us - "all this for you, before you could know anything of it… “

So it is that birth and death are intertwined. Sacrifices made for us, death that we may have life.  May our pray this weekend be that we never take our life, our freedoms, our systems of justice and democracy for granted.  And as Christ paid the ultimate sacrifice may we also never take our salvation for granted either...

May God bless you through this coming week and please read the notices below - there is a lot going on!
Rev Alan

Dudley Refugee Support Group
We have been asked to prayerfully consider if any of us / our churches can support this request...
Dudley Refugee Support Group was set up by a group of us living in the Wollaston and Stourbridge area, following the reports of people fleeing Afghanistan, and families arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs.  There was a local and national outpouring of desire to help.  Following a facebook appeal and contacting the local churches we received a lot of donations. We have had donations of good quality and new clothes, toiletries, school equipment (pens, pencils, rulers etc) and some toys; and have already made up packs of school uniforms and school equipment.  We have people with baby equipment and household equipment waiting to hand these on when requested. We work with the DCVS (Dudley Council for Voluntary Service) and CFED (Centre for Equality and Diversity) and we have received requests for clothes and toiletries from Dudley, Halesowen, Wolverhampton, and the SALMA foodbank in Sandwell.  We have had to store the donations in dining rooms,  local garages and also rented a lockup.  We are in discussion with the Council in the hope of finding more suitable facilities to store, sort and distribute from.  However so far a space has not been found.  I am writing to ask if you have, or know of, anywhere that would enable us to have a base for our storage and sorting.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this.  Do contact us at admin@dudleyrefugeesupport.co.uk

Dear Sisters and Brothers

As COP26 reflects upon urgent and real action needed to protect our climate for future generations we are reminded of the responsibility God gave to us to care for this precious ecosystem that sustains us.  We at last begin to see how fragile it is and how poor we have been in the last 100 years in our attitudes towards limited resources, waste and our relentless desire for more stuff.

We join with Christians across the world in praying for those whose lives are oppressed by our consumption and we seek not only to support COP26 but to encourage ourselves and others to take the steps we should to support conservation and recycling.    These are actions rooted in justice for all people.

And in just over a week we will be marking Remembrance.  An opportunity for us to quietly give thanks for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice that we might live in freedom and peace.  In recent years more people than ever seem to have supported this annual moment of respectful reflection.  For me it always draws me back to the cross and Christ’s sacrifice once and for all…

Perhaps we should pray that reflection by all - on the sacrifice of creation and the sacrifice of people, might lead to a greater shared understanding of our common need for peace which enables space, time and energy to focus on what really matters.

May God bless you through this coming week
Rev Alan

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Recently the circuit leadership team were able to spend some time together on retreat for the first time in nearly two years.   We are blessed by the breadth of folk who offer themselves into these roles and it was a joy to spend some time together reflecting on where we are and what our future priorities might be.

It’s clear that as Covid continues many churches are doing their best to ‘return’ but attendance has been affected - in terms of church members, visitors and preachers.  It will probably take the next year or so for us to see what the future shape of the circuit will be.

As a team we felt God was callling us clearly to get back to basics (to use an old political term!).  Bringing worship, discipleship and the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus into the centre of our church lives.

The question is - how do we achieve this?  We want to focus on a range of ideas in the coming few years such as:

  • Rooting all we do in prayer.
  • Continuing to build a sense of circuit where resources are shared
  • Exploring themed preaching and bible study and offering this to churches
  • Engaging in mission by first offering a range of discipleship pathways that enable folk to find how they might best express their faith and share it with others

So we look forward with excitement to what God may have in store for us moving forward.  Please join me in praying for these themes and ideas.

May God bless you through this journey.
Rev Alan

Dear Sisters and Brothers
We remain committed to providing full text services which we know people appreciate receiving especially if they are unable to get to church.  We are also continuing to record weekly online services that are available via the links below.  Again we know that there are those, both in relation to Covid and also in relation to the winter nights drawing in, who appreciate being able to watch a local service online rather than go out in the evening.  We are grateful to the circuit technical community and Michele who coordinates  the recording of these services alongside the preachers who prepare them.

We give thanks to God for sustaining us all as we journey forward and we pray especially that the impact of Covid will be contained over this coming winter.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

The uncertainties of Covid continue to cause difficulties within our local churches in terms of what is the best course of action irrespective of what the world or other churches are doing.  Once again I ask us all to be both graceful and careful in acknowledging that we are not only protecting ourselves but also those around us.   And I also thank all those who steward and guide folk entering our buildings and services.

We move forward seeking to put all that we do before God in prayer and trusting that the Holy Spirit goes before us.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

As Christians we should always be drawn to a global view because we are all interconnected.  And even when some of the challenges we read about seem overwhelming we are still called to pray.  So today we remember in particular the tensions between China and Taiwan where we pray for peace.  We pray especially for climate change - that governments and corporations will put aside self interest and greed in order to tackle this issue properly and protect the world's children and grandchildren.   And we pray for all those who have been subject to abuse, neglect, violence or marginalisation.  May we together build a better global society.

CLT Away

This week from Thursday to Saturday the circuit leadership team will be away on retreat together.  Please pray for us.  Should there be an emergency you can call the circuit mobile phone which we will check: 07712 332075.

Dear Sisters and Brothers
It is with great sadness that I bring the news to you of the sudden and unexpected passing of Sue Worthington - a faithful and longstanding member of Kingswinford but also a servant of church and circuit, most recently as part of the circuit safeguarding training team.  In particular we hold Rod and Sue’s two brothers in our prayers and all those who knew, loved and worked with Sue.

Her passing is a tough reminder of the fragility of life and how important it is that we seek to love one another fully and make the most of each day we have.  I know that many others across the circuit have lost loved ones in difficult circumstances and so as we pray for her and her family, so we remember all those who mourn.

Together may we hold onto the Good News of our faith that death is not the end and that God in Christ travels with us in this life and has won the victory that assures our journey to the next.  This is a mystery to us now but still we give thanks in faith.

May God bless you all and may you know the peace of God’s presence this night.
Rev Alan

For all the saints who from their labours rest,
Who thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesus, be for ever blest:
Alleluia, alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
Thou in the darkness still their one true light:
Alleluia, alleluia!

Our Ongoing Support of Online Services
Now we have moved to online morning services there is no official online ‘coffee after service’.  So we are trialling a circuit online ‘coffee room’ in CoffeeRoom1 on Sundays at 7pm for those who would like to continue to meet for fellowship in this way.  You will still be able to use the buttons at the top of the window where you watch the livestreamed service each week to access this online ‘room’.

Dear Sisters and Brothers

We continue to pray this week for Afghanistan - especially for the rights and freedoms of women who live and work there.   We also hold in prayer the effectiveness of the Covid Vaccines as we enter the Autumn.  We pray that community life will continue to be safe and stable…

Have a safe and blessed week.
